Subscribing to MATHDEP

To subscribe, send an email to LISTSERV at LISTSERV.HEANET.IE with the command:

SUBSCRIBE MATHDEP your name

Listserv will reply by email with a confirmation link which you must click on to confirm subscription. (Thus, you cannot subscribe with an email address that you do not have access to.) Please check your spam filter if you do not receive this confirmation email.

Migration and Unsubscribing

To allow for better spam control, new mathdep subscribers are periodically (roughly once per month) migrated to a local mail relay system. After a user is migrated, messages received will have a footnote linking to here which allows the subscriber to suspend delivery.

To completely unsubscribe, or change email address, contact the administrators at mdep-admin AT maths.ucd.ie
To unsubscribe before this migration takes place, send an email to LISTSERV at LISTSERV.HEANET.IE with the command: UNSUBSCRIBE MATHDEP

Sending a notice to MATHDEP

Announcements to MATHDEP should be emailed to mathdep AT listserv.heanet.ie. Announcements should not include attachments. Submissions containing binary attachments are blocked. If you wish to reference material not in plain text, include a web link (URL, URI) to a site containing the material.

Announcements will fail to be distributed unless they satisfy a particular requirement. Any colleague who has previously posted to mathdep will be able to tell you about this.

I didn't receive a message I sent to mathdep...

Mathdep distributes to all list members, including the sender. This behaviour is experienced by gmail users as a "clutter prevention" feature. See here.

I've unsubscribed but still receive messages from MATHDEP

Your school/dept may be subscribed and forward mathdep messages to a local distribution list. You will need to contact your local administrator.

The MATHDEP calendar

Events emailed to MATHDEP henceforth can be included in the Mathdep Google-Calendar or the Feed Address
To be included in the calendar, the mathdep posting must include entries similar to the following.

title:: Test Calendar Entry
content:: A description of the event including information about
:: the speaker and topic. A relevant web address may be included.
:: Several lines may be used: start these with :: as the
:: first two characters.
:: The duration in the calendar is set to 1 hour.
:: Specify a different duration in the content field.

date-time:: 25th July 2011 at 16:00am
location:: Belfield Seminar Room.
endevent::

If the additional tag noemail:: is included, the posting will not be sent to the main list, but the data will be sent to the calendar.

The perl script which parses the data is line oriented. Your email software must include it in text/plain form. Some email software emits text/html output; in this case make sure that it also provides a text/plain output. Tags like "title::" should be the first non-blank entries on the line. Especially important is the "date-time::" entry because it must be parsed in order to place the event correctly in the calendar. The date must appear first separated by "AT" from the time. The first 3 letters of the English name of month must appear after the day number. As above st, nd, rd, etc., may be included after the day number, but the first 3 adjacent letters after the day number must be the first letters of the month name. The year number is optional -- the year is taken to be the current year if the month is not less in order than the current month. A date-time entry prior to the current month or more than 11 months in the future will not be forwarded to the calendar. When the month number is less than that of the current month, the year number is one more than the current year. The time entry must appear after the word "at". The script looks for a single number or a number of the form 14:00 (or 14.00). The entries 4pm, 16:00, 16.00 pm and 16:00 am are parsed to yield equivalent time data. If any of the four fields title, content, date-time or location does not appear or the date-time does not parse, then the information will not be forwarded to the calendar. The script which parses these fields expects the labels as exactly as above (case is ignored). If there is only one calendar entry, the endevent tag may be omitted.
The calendar includes accented characters and some other symbols using unicode encoded in utf-8. Many email programs use iso-8859-1 encoding to include accented characters. The perl script translates iso-8859-1 accented characters into their utf-8 equivalent. Another often used encoding is windows-1252. The script uses the iso-8851-1 translation for windows-1252: some but not all windows-1252 are rendered correctly. If you wish to make extensive use of non-ASCII characters, you should employ an email program which encodes in utf-8.
The perl script which forwards to the calendar is based on lines of text. Email programs do not always respect line breaks entered. They also add line breaks. If calendar notices you submit do not appear as you intend, you should try using shorter lines, with "::" to indicate continuing data. This may be used for the title, content and location fields; the date-time data must be on a single line.
